When You Should Wear Your Compression Garment
Disclaimer: Your individual recovery and wear schedule should always be guided by your surgeon or healthcare professional. If you experience increased swelling, pain, or discomfort during wear, consult your healthcare provider or a compression garment specialist.
After surgery, your compression garment becomes your constant companion. It’s there to support your healing, reduce swelling, and help shape your results. But a common question we hear from clients is: Do I really have to wear it all the time? The answer depends on where you are in your recovery and what you're doing day to day.
Here’s a guide to when your compression garment should stay on - and when it’s best to give your body a break.
When You Should Wear Your Compression Garment
1. During the Day (Especially in Early Recovery)
In the first few weeks post-surgery, consistent compression is crucial. Most surgeons recommend wearing your garment 24/7 for the first 2–6 weeks, removing it only for hygiene and dressing changes.
2. While Sleeping
Yes, even while you sleep! Compression at night helps maintain consistent pressure, which reduces swelling and supports optimal contouring as your body heals.
3. When Moving Around the House
Whether you’re walking to the kitchen or doing light chores, your body still benefits from the support. Movement encourages circulation, and the garment helps keep swelling in check.
4. During Travel
If you’re in the car or on a plane - even for a short trip - wear your compression garment. Sitting for extended periods can cause fluid retention, and compression helps prevent that buildup.
5. Light Exercise (Post-Clearance Only)
Once your surgeon clears you for gentle movement, like walking or stretching, wear your compression garment. It helps support healing tissue and prevents fluid from pooling during mild physical activity.
When You Should Not Wear Your Compression Garment
1. While Showering or Bathing
Always remove your compression garment during showers or baths. Moisture trapped in the garment can lead to skin irritation or infection. After your shower, gently pat yourself dry and allow your skin to breathe briefly before putting the garment back on.
2. If Your Surgeon Advises a Break
Every recovery is different. If your healthcare provider suggests removing your garment for brief periods during the day or night, follow their instructions. These breaks are sometimes necessary for skin assessment, wound care, or to reduce pressure if irritation occurs.
Tips for Comfortable Garment Wear
Rotate your Garments
Rotate between two garments. This lets one dry after washing, while you wear the other.
Keep your Skin Dry and Moisturised
Use fragrance-free, light moisturisers to prevent dryness without affecting fabric performance.
Always Wear a Clean Garment
Sweat and bacteria can build up quickly, so regular washing is key.
